A Step-by-Step Guide to Download Files Using cPanel File Manager

Downloading files from your website is a simple process using cPanel’s File Manager. This is useful for creating manual backups of specific files, folders, or your entire site.

Step 1: Access File Manager

First, log in to your cPanel account. Once you’re in the dashboard, find the Files section and click on the File Manager icon. This will open a new tab showing a directory tree of your website’s files.

Step 2: Navigate to the File or Folder

Use the directory tree on the left to navigate to the location of the file or folder you want to download. The root directory for your primary website is typically public_html. Double-click on a folder to open it and view its contents.

Step 3: Select the File(s)

You have a few options for selecting what you want to download:

  • For a single file: Simply click on the file once.
  • For multiple files: Hold down the Ctrl key (on Windows) or the Cmd key (on Mac) and click on each file you want to select.
  • For a folder: Click once on the folder you wish to download.

Step 4: Download the File(s)

Once your file or folder is selected, click the Download button at the top of the File Manager interface.

  • For a single file: The file will be downloaded directly to your computer.
  • For a folder or multiple files: File Manager will automatically compress the selected items into a single .zip archive before downloading. This is because you can only download one item at a time. The compressed file will save to your computer, and you’ll then need to unzip it to access its contents.
