How to Add Edit and Manage DNS in cPanel

Adding, Editing, and Managing DNS in cPanel

Managing DNS (Domain Name System) records in cPanel is done through the Zone Editor tool. The Zone Editor allows you to add, edit, and delete DNS records like A, CNAME, MX, and TXT records, which are essential for directing your domain’s traffic.

Step 1: Accessing the Zone Editor

  1. Log in to your cPanel account.
  2. In the main dashboard, find the Domains section.
  3. Click on Zone Editor.

This page lists all the domains associated with your cPanel account. You’ll see buttons to manage, add, or delete DNS records for each domain.

Step 2: Adding a New DNS Record

The Zone Editor provides quick links to add the most common types of DNS records.

  1. On the Zone Editor page, find the domain you want to edit and click the + A Record, + CNAME Record, or + MX Record button.
  2. A new form will appear. Fill in the following details:
    • Name: Enter the subdomain or host for the record (e.g., blog for a blog.yourdomain.com record). The domain name will be automatically appended.
    • TTL (Time to Live): The default value (usually 14400) is fine for most cases. This number dictates how long a server should cache the record.
    • Record Type: The type is pre-selected based on the button you clicked (A, CNAME, etc.).
    • Record: Enter the value for the record.
      • For A Records: Enter an IPv4 address (e.g., 192.0.2.1).
      • For CNAME Records: Enter the destination hostname (e.g., ghs.google.com).
      • For MX Records: Enter the priority (e.g., 0) and the destination mail server (e.g., mail.yourdomain.com).
  3. Click the Add a Record button to save.

Step 3: Editing or Deleting an Existing DNS Record

  1. In the Zone Editor, find your domain and click the Manage button. This will show a full list of all DNS records for that domain.
  2. To edit a record, find it in the list and click the Edit button in the “Actions” column. You can then change the record’s values and click Save Record.
  3. To delete a record, find it in the list and click the Delete button in the “Actions” column. You’ll be asked to confirm the deletion.

Key DNS Record Types

  • A Record: Maps a domain or subdomain to an IPv4 address. Used for pointing your domain to a web server.
  • CNAME Record: Creates an alias from one domain to another. For example, www.yourdomain.com can be a CNAME record pointing to yourdomain.com.
  • MX Record: Specifies the mail server responsible for accepting email messages on behalf of a domain.
  • TXT Record: Used to store text data for various purposes, such as SPF records for email authentication or domain ownership verification.
