How to Restore Backup of a File or Directory via WHM

How to Restore a File or Directory from a Backup in WHM

Restoring a backup of a file or directory is a critical task for any server administrator or website owner. It allows you to quickly recover from data loss, accidental deletions, or other unforeseen issues. The process is straightforward when using WHM’s built-in backup tools.

Step 1: Log In to WHM

The first step is to log in to your WebHost Manager (WHM) account. You will need your root user credentials to access the necessary administrative tools. The WHM login page is typically located at https://your-server-ip:2087 or https://your-server-hostname:2087.

Step 2: Navigate to the Backup Restoration Interface

Once you are logged in, use the WHM search bar on the left side of the screen. Type “Backup” and then select the Backup Restoration option from the search results. This interface is where you can manage and restore your server’s backups.

Step 3: Select the Backup to Restore

The Backup Restoration interface will present you with a list of available backups, which are typically organized by date.

  1. Choose the Backup Date: You need to select the backup from the date you wish to restore from. For example, if you accidentally deleted a file yesterday, you would select yesterday’s backup.
  2. Select the User: Once you have chosen the backup date, you will be prompted to select the cPanel account (user) for which you want to restore a file or directory. Select the correct user account from the list.

Step 4: Locate the File or Directory

After selecting the user and backup date, you’ll be taken to a file manager-like interface that shows the contents of the chosen backup.

  1. Browse the Directory Tree: Navigate through the directories to find the specific file or folder you need to restore. The interface is designed to be easy to use, allowing you to click through folders just as you would on a desktop computer.
  2. Select the Item: Once you have located the desired file or directory, simply check the box next to its name to select it for restoration. You can select multiple items at once if needed.

Step 5: Begin the Restoration Process

With your file or directory selected, you can now initiate the restoration.

  1. Review and Confirm: At the bottom of the page, click the Restore button. A confirmation pop-up will appear, displaying a list of the files and directories you have selected. Take a moment to review this list to ensure you’re restoring the correct items.
  2. Execute the Restore: Click Restore again to confirm and start the process. The server will then begin the restoration job.

The time it takes to complete the restoration depends on the size of the file or directory and the overall server load. You can usually monitor the progress of the restoration in a dedicated queue or log section within the WHM backup interface. Once the process is complete, the file or directory will be restored to its original location, overwriting any current files with the same name.
